Level 1 Playoff Loss Ends Viking Season

Lake Geneva Badger 16, Parker 14 at Lake Geneva High School, Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Co-Capts [L-R] Creed Knutson, Aaron Ackerman, and Matt Simon [Nick Munger is hidden] at the coin toss. Parker won the toss but because of the high winds deferred and had the first quarter with the wind at their backs. The Vikings scored first on a Decker Thompson pass to Cody Taber [below]. However the Badgers responded with 16 unanswered points to take a 16-7 halftime lead.
The Badgers of Lake Geneva used a swarming defense to stop the Parker running game in the second quarter. Viking running back Adam Vesterfelt received plenty of attention. Vesterfelt is pictured above and to the left.

Badger sophomore quarterback Peter Krien [below, #2] ran the Lake Geneva option to prefection in the second quarter leading two drives that resulted in a TD and a FG.

With less than a minute to play in the first half Krien sprinted down the left sideline for a long TD run that made the score 16 - 7.

A Game Of Inches

Football is a game of momentum. In the second half there were many plays that gave one team or the other the momentum. Above left: The Vikings stopped the Badgers one inch short of a first down on fourth and short. Above center: Parker made a crucial second half first down by less than an inch on a fourth and one. Above right: Gus Arello [56] a Badger defensive lineman just got a piece of Adam Vesterfelt's [below] left foot. Arello's grab stopped a big play as the middle of the field was wide open.

Left: Nick Munger's blocked punt in the fourth quarter gave the Vikings the ball deep in Lake Geneva territory.

However the Badgers held on fourth and one from the one [above]

Above left: Erik Albeck took the second half kickoff back for a touchdown. Instead of a 16-14 score with seconds gone in the third quarter the TD was nullified by a Parker clipping penalty. Above right: In the third quarter Albeck intercepted a pass and returned the ball to the Badger 35 yard line. However the Vikings could not take advantage of the momentum change. The third quarter ended with Badger 16, Parker 7.

Parker refused to quit and mounted a furious rally in the fourth quarter. QB Decker Thompson is shown above scrambling for a crucial first down at the Badger 34 yardline.
